The Kush Empire
Eq: HOW DID THE CIVILIZATION OF KUSH DEVELOP?As Egypt declined at the end of the New kingdom, Nubians saw a chance to break away from Egypt's hold. In 850 BCE a group of Nubians made up an independent kingdom called Kush. The next few centuries were ruled by powerful kings in the city of Napata. Napata stood along the upper Nile where trade caravans crossed the river. These Caravans carried valuable goods from Kush to Egypt. The Kush kingdom grew strong and wealthy enough to take over Egypt. The King Kashta led his army North with a powerful army. Kashta's son Piye completed his father's conquest in 728 BCE. Piye then ruled both Egypt and Kush from the city of Napata. The Kushites liked the Egyptian culture and built small pyramids and sandstone temples similar to those of Egypt. Kush ruled Egypt for a short period of time. In 600 BCE the Assyrians invadedEgypt, pushing the Kushites back to where they started out in the South. The Kushites learned how to make Iron from the Assyrians though. This development helped their everyday life and their military.
